Working Practices
With working from home people don’t have to leave their house to do their job they can do it at home and still get paid for it. Instead of you getting up early and going to work in an office you’re in the comfort of your own home with your family and friends. Your computer can be linked to the workplace so you can get all your files and talk to someone at work via Skype. You can now send work to anywhere in the world via email so if you work for a company in America you can stay at home and work as long as there is a link to the company, and email your work to them. Working from home would be more flexible for parents as they would have to look after children and may suit people who don’t live in a city or town.
This is an example of a mum working from home and the impact it has on her. http://www.tots100.co.uk/2012/10/30/working-from-home-angst/. She states that she “never has time to spend with her husband and spend time with her child. She is constantly on her I pad doing work”.
Working from home can also have a down side as you never get away from work you are constantly at work and never get a break from it. You can’t have a break, go talk to friends and colleges. You are alone by your self so you are isolated and have no one to talk to. You might have to work longer hours as you have not done enough work so you could be up to all hours in the morning finishing work. When you’re working from home you can get easily distracted so you don’t work as hard as you would do if you were in the office. You can say you will do it later so you are doing less and less work.
Shopping and Economy
Shops are closing down because of the online shopping so the shops can’t compete with the like of Amazon and e-bay. As an example HMV a music and movie store has went into administration because they can’t compete with people buying DVDs and music online cheaper and with this they have had to close 66 stores. With Amazon and e-bay you don’t have to leave your house to see what they are selling you can check online and purchase them but will have to wait for them to be delivered. With the sops closing down people are also losing their job with HMV the closing of their shops will impact over 900 staff.
With shopping online people don’t leave their house to do the shopping so there not going into shops and spend more money on stuff even if they don’t need. People are doing their clothes shopping, food shopping and other shopping online. You have to pay with credit card and there is a chance of identity theft which means you have to be careful about the sites you are on. Which means the money is not going to the local economy.
Education
With the use of IT in education all the work that students will need is all on the computer. So instead of carrying books around with them all day they can just log on and the work is there the teacher doesn’t have to stand up and explain what they have to do is explained on the computer. All assignment work is saved on the computer so they can always access their work and not say they lost it. For example in the SRC we use moodle which is Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) so all the assignment work and briefs are all on folders for the different units we have and we can access them any where that has internet and do our work from home. You don’t have to leave your house to learn you can do online courses. You can research online for the information you need but you don’t need too much information but you’re not aloud to copy and paste online. With all the new technology that is available schools have to update their systems regularly and all the hardware so we don’t use black boards we use interactive white board so that they have to spend loads of money on new equipment.
A downfall to using ICT in education is when students are sending work for assignments they ask the teacher did they get the work then they say no and so they haven’t got the work in then. People will say that there work has disappeared so they don’t have to do it and it’s just in a different folder. With using IT some students might not have internet at home so they can’t do the work so they fall behind. Some students might have different versions of Microsoft office so they can’t do the work or when you go back to school it won’t recognise it.
Communication
With the use of IT for communication emails and important information can be sent quicker now using the internet. It use to be every thing had to be hand written and sent by letter which took ages to get to the receiver. Every thing can be sent quicker now using emails and attachments you don’t have to print out work to hand up you can send them as in an email. You can now communicate with people via Skype so if someone lives in the other side of the work you can chat with them and see them for free. Celebrities also use twitter as a way to communicate with their fans so they are kept up to date with their day to day lives.
With using IT to communicate there is a chance that the email that they sent can be intercepted and it there are personal details on that then they can use the details to commit fraud. With this there is a chance of you opening a virus which is attached to the email.
Threats of IT
Cyber Bullying
The threat of IT is in the form of cyber bulling this can have an affect on a lot of different people. This is more likely to be done by teenagers through mobile devices or other means of contacting each other such things like Facebook. Some people can take it as far as ringing them and threatening them. In some cases of cyber bullying this can lead to them killing them selves. This can be done anonymously sending threatening messages, pick out their flaws, making fun of them and calling them names. Social websites should take more precaution on cyber bullying as this can lead to being dealt with serious measures e.g. the police.
Phishing
Phishing is when someone steals personal information that is already on the internet from a webpage this is why identity theft can be done by anyone as people are putting there details on unsecure websites. The people who try are trying to steal the identity usually get the information they need from the likes of Facebook and Twitter. The people who steal the identity use it to create fake passports and try and get into different countries. Also they use it to take out money in that persons name and the person they took the identity off is left will big bills to pay. They could do this by just using there identity to go into the bank and use there identity to get money out of there account.
Denial of service attack
Denial of service is when someone or a group of people hack into your website or countries system and try to bring it down. If you now want to bring down a country you don’t need to start a war you just hack into their system and bring all there defense systems down and they will be open for an attack. People would only hack your system to try and gather information on certain things also to leave files on your system like a virus. With IT now people have used it to hack into Sony PlayStation 3 Console and made the network be down for 1 month and lots of users lost personal details as well. It cost Sony network millions to up their firewalls so it wasn’t as easy to hack into their network.
People who don’t have access to the internet
Some disadvantages to people not having access to the internet are that they won’t be able to have the same deals like everyone else has available online. People without access to the internet they can’t go on websites like Amazon and eBay to get the product they want for cheaper, they also can’t compare the online prices to the in store prices. They are also disadvantaged by people who have access to the internet as they can get jobs quicker as they can apply for jobs online and send their CV via email so you don’t have to go around shops leaving in your CV and applying in store. They also can’t go on social media sites so they can’t talk to other family members who live far away and never talk to. With some generation of people they don’t know how to use computer so they won’t have internet either so they are missing out on loads of stuff that is available on the internet and . With no access to the internet people loose out on so many great deals that are only available online.
